$175 for a bunch of tulle and a comb. What do you think?

I tried on veils with my roommates, Kortlyn and Jen, Tuesday night.

I found a veil I really liked -- until I looked at the price tag.

$175.

Seriously? It's just a bunch of tulle hot glued to a comb.

So, I ask you: Do you think I could make one or would I just be wasting money better spent on something professionally made?

  2. I'm particular about veils but I also think there are only a few that are worth more than $100. And most of them can be mocked up for much less.

I really liked the mantilla-style veil we did for Liz, and it was super cheap. Mom sewed a lace edging to the edge of a big oval of chiffon and then I sewed pearls to the lace and a comb to the chiffon (not gathered). The slight weight of the pearls gave the veil a nice drape, but not everyone likes the flat mantilla silhouette like we do -- and it doesn't look good with every dress.

  3. I love the mantilla style, but I have yet to try one on that is flattering on me.

What do you think about blushers?

  4. There's so many kinds of blushers -- I assume you mean just a veil where none of the layers are past the shoulders (and NOT a long veil with a shorter blusher layer, and NOT a super-short chin-length birdcage blusher attached to some kind of headpiece a la 1950s.)

If I'm right in that assumption, then I think yes, a blusher would probably work well with your dress. I think as far as veils go, less is more with a dress/silhouette like yours. You have a great figure that's shown off by your dress and you have very pretty embroidery on your dress and the addition of the jacket also adds a "busy-ness" to the top half of your outfit, so having a long veil or a veil with too many layers (in my opinion) might be too much and detract from the overall effect.

I think that dress might also look great with just something pretty in your hair and no veil at all, particularly if you're still going to have your great red hair for the wedding -- just a pretty headband (that one's beautiful!) or a big white flower and let that white non-veil piece, contrasted by your striking red hair, be your crowning ornamentation?

Sorry to go on and on. I'm much more opinionated about veils and wedding hair pieces than I am about dresses. I don't know why. Maybe just having to look at 1000 too many pretty dresses ruined by too much foof. :) Not that you would ever foof. You're way too classy for that. I just have to babble because I have all this wedding energy and no place to put it....

  5. I love the way that headband looked in your hair and, without knowing what your dress looks like (!) I can't say if it would look better than a veil but I think you would be loverly with just the band and no veil at all.....

  6. Bet you didn't think I'd be commenting on here in the middle of the work day. ha! I'm full of surprises.

To business- I think that whatever style you want and all the details aside, veils are easy enough to make. And, it doesn't have to be a chore. You can have a few girls get together for a movie or food and then have that as an activity. I would suggest deciding exactly what you want it to look like beforehand so it doesn't turn into too much of an up-for-interpretation type thing. I would totally be down for helping! Have you decided any more in-depth on what to do??
